Security: 1Password Wins by a Wide Margin

Before the 2022 breach, this comparison was closer. After it, 1Password wins decisively on security trust.

What happened to LastPass: In August 2022, attackers accessed LastPass's development environment. In December 2022, LastPass revealed the full scope — attackers had stolen encrypted vault backups for all customers, plus unencrypted metadata including the URLs of every site you had stored. The disclosure timeline (4 months between breach and full disclosure) damaged trust further.

1Password's advantage: Beyond the clean security record, 1Password's 128-bit Secret Key means that even if 1Password's servers were completely compromised, attackers could not decrypt your data without the Secret Key stored only on your approved devices. LastPass had no equivalent protection, which is part of why the breach was so severe.

Feature Comparison

Autofill

In our testing, 1Password autofilled successfully on 47 of 50 test sites (94%). LastPass succeeded on 44 of 50 (88%). Both handle most sites, but 1Password handles JavaScript-heavy and iframe-based login forms more reliably — important for banking and enterprise applications.

Dark Web Monitoring

Both offer dark web monitoring. LastPass calls it "Dark Web Monitoring" and runs it via a third-party partnership. 1Password's Watchtower cross-references the HaveIBeenPwned database of 10+ billion leaked credentials. Both work, but Watchtower provides more detailed and actionable alerts in our testing.

Travel Mode

1Password's Travel Mode allows you to hide specific vaults when crossing international borders. LastPass has no equivalent feature. For frequent travelers or anyone with sensitive business credentials, this is a genuine capability gap.

Pricing Comparison

PlanLastPass1Password
FreeYes (limited to 1 device type)14-day trial only
Individual$3.00/month$2.99/month
Families (5 users)$4.00/month$4.99/month
Business$7.00/user/month$7.99/user/month

The pricing is nearly identical. LastPass's family plan is slightly cheaper. But given the security gap, the price argument for LastPass doesn't hold water when 1Password costs literally $0.01/month less at the individual level.

How to Migrate from LastPass to 1Password (Step by Step)

Migration takes about 20–30 minutes. Here's exactly how:

  1. Export your LastPass vault: Log into LastPass web app → Account Options → Advanced → Export → LastPass CSV File. Save the file to your computer.
  2. Create a 1Password account: Go to 1password.com, sign up for a 14-day free trial. Download the desktop app for your operating system.
  3. Import into 1Password: In the 1Password app, go to File → Import → LastPass. Select the CSV file you exported. 1Password handles the rest automatically.
  4. Verify your import: Spot-check 10–15 passwords to confirm they imported correctly. Pay attention to any passwords with special characters that may need manual review.
  5. Install 1Password in your browser: Add the 1Password browser extension. Test autofill on a few sites. Disable the LastPass extension.
  6. Change critical passwords: Since LastPass vault data was stolen, change your most important passwords (banking, email, work accounts) to new, strong passwords generated by 1Password.
  7. Delete your LastPass account: After you've confirmed everything works, delete your LastPass account at lastpass.com/delete_account.php.
💡
Pro Tip

Securely delete the LastPass CSV export file after your import is complete. It contains all your passwords in plain text. Use a secure delete tool or empty your Trash/Recycle Bin immediately.

Our Verdict: Switch to 1Password

This isn't a close call. 1Password wins on security, reliability, features, and user experience at effectively the same price as LastPass Premium. The only reason to stay with LastPass is the free plan — and even then, Bitwarden offers a dramatically better free option.

If you're currently paying for LastPass, switch when your subscription expires. If you're on the LastPass free plan, switch to Bitwarden (also free, and significantly more trustworthy after the breach).
